About Dr. Thomas Ottavi
Dr. Thomas M. Ottavi, PhD, is the author of Why is Johnny so Detached?, published by Youthlight Inc. in March 2007. Dr. Ottavi is a practicing licensed psychologist and the Director of Clinical Services with Hillcrest Family Services, which serves the mental health and social service needs of many communities in eastern Iowa. He earned his bachelors degree in psychology for the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, and his doctorate from the Counseling Psychology program and the University of Iowa, with a pediatric psychology clinical internship at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Dr. Ottavi is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), the Iowa Psychological Association, the National Registry of Health Service Providerss and the Association for Treatment and Training in the Attachment of Children (ATTACh).
Dr. Ottavi has over 13 years experience in psychological evaluation, therapy, school and agency consultation, training and program development in youth education and mental health. He has provided direct service or consultation with hundreds of school cases, professionals, and parents for students with attachment or trauma issues and significant disruptions of their early years which impact school functioning. Dr. Ottavi's approach to school attachment issues seeks to empower parents and caregivers, students, and school professionals using relationship-building approaches in planning, collaboration and intervention.
Dr. Ottavi has led numerous workshops and training sessions for school professionals, health and mental health professionals, foster-parents and adoptive-parents who help with attachment, trauma, and neglect issues at local, regional, national, and international conferences. Dr. Ottavi has great interest in collaboration, consultation, and research correspondence in this attachment and school area.
